Parramatta

Parramatta
/pærəˈmætə/ (say paruh'matuh)

noun
a city in NSW in Sydney's metropolitan west; the second settlement established after by Governor Phillip after the arrival of the First Fleet.
{Australian Aboriginal; Dharug burra place + matta eels}
Parramatta lies in territory traditionally inhabited by the Dharug people. European settlement dates from 1788, but until 1791 it was known as Rose Hill. The first wheat grown in Australia was harvested here in 1789 and the first land grant, that to James Ruse, made in 1789. The town was laid out in 1790, and the streets more formally set and named by Governor Macquarie in 1811. Parramatta's many heritage buildings include Elizabeth Farm, the oldest house in Australia, built in 1793 for John Macarthur and extended around 1826–28; Old Government House, built in 1799 and enlarged in 1815–16; and Experiment Farm Cottage, built in about 1820 by surgeon John Harris on Ruse's original grant. Parramatta was proclaimed a municipality in 1861 and a city in 1938. It is regarded as the geographic and demographic centre of greater Sydney and is an important commercial and administrative centre.
